Ten years in the making

On the 29th of April 2015 I watched this incredible documentary (Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel) and wrote the following in my journal:

“I love the way Diana Vreeland showcased unconventional women and celebrated eccentricity and self-expression. It makes me want to make myself a work of art. To express myself truly through my art and my clothing. I want to be a trailblazer. An oddity. An eccentric. A rock n roll artist. I love the idea of creating a character and living theatrically.”

I also noted that I wanted “to have an affair with a brilliant photographer and be his muse.” 😜

On the 18th of April 2025 - a mere 10 years later, almost to the day - my brilliant photographer husband and I captured on film the character that had existed only in my head since that day - Zuzu. The most theatrical, eccentric, and rock n roll version of me.

(You can see our photographs of her/me all over this site.)

By pure coincidence, I was flipping through my old journals a few weeks later looking for a particular quote and came across the April 2015 entry and realised that I had actually made that dream come true.

Clothes and fashion are such a crucial part of how I construct my identity - the drag I wear to present myself to the world - and identity is such a crucial part of my artwork. It’s why I share my outfits with you, and why I’m determined to one day design some fabrics and collaborate with a fashion designer.
