The magical world of artist homes
The idea of home has always been an elusive concept for me. I have moved around so much in my life (where I live now is my 48th 'home'), that I've never been able to link the idea of 'home' with a specific place, so I've been forced to be a bit more creative. For me now, home is where my love is (and where my books are!).
Wherever I’ve lived, though, I’ve done my best to make it reflect who I am, and I am endlessly inspired by people (artists in particular) who make their space an extension of their self-expression.
To that end, here is a delightful (and regularly updated) selection of artists’ homes for your delectation:
We begin with the visual deliciousness of Australian artist Claudia Rubinstein's home.
The ascetic single-mindedness of the home of Japanese artist Yoshiko Jinzenji.
The unbridled, yet unseen, creativity in the home of artist Ron Gittins.
My hero Olivia Laing’s amazing house and garden
Oh! And we can’t talk about homes without also talking about gardens! My favourite job when I was younger was the summer I spent working in a plant nursery. Having my hands in the earth every day felt like heaven - I've never slept better, or had a more regulated nervous system. Gardens are magic, and artists’ gardens in particular.
"The garden, which opened to the public in the spring of 1998, was “a magic space” for Saint Phalle, who said: “I lost all notion of time, and the limitations of normal life were abolished. I felt comforted and transported. Here, everything was possible.”"
