The week that was: Jul 12th-18th

An octopus? Covered in hot pink disco lights? For me?

Working on…

  • Of course, still Things Men Have Said To Me Instead Of Hello. I’ve made a special page for the whole collection and finished the write ups for the final two pieces, which you can find here and here.

  • Now the collection is halfway through, I’m pitching it all over the place. I’m swinging bigger than I ever have before and pitching to the most unreasonable places, but fuck it - no guts, no glory, and I believe in this work wholeheartedly.

Thinking about…

Being a creative person involves swinging wildly between crippling self-doubt and delusions of grandeur, often on a hourly basis! But if you have an idea you believe in, it’s much easier to lean into the ‘delusion’ and just go for it. I’ve asked for so many things this week that feel utterly ridiculous and completely impossible, but I know that the magic lies in the asking - no matter what the results are.

Reading…

The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith

I can’t believe I’ve never read this! Patricia Highsmith has been popping up in lots of conversations recently and she seems to have been a fascinating woman. The Ripley series is her magnum opus and I’m loving it so far.

Watching…

Shifty - a documentary series by Adam Curtis exploring the shift in the foundations of power in Britain at the end of the 20th century. It’s made entirely with clips from contemporary television - documentaries, news reports, TV shows, etc etc - and it is one of the most compelling documentaries I’ve ever seen.

Listening to…

We came across a fabulous YouTube channel the other day which does music documentaries, with companion playlists of everything they discuss in each episode. It’s such a treat to follow a musical story someone else has created for you - like making a mixtape for a friend in the olden days.
