Watch me draw in my sketchbook

Join me in my cosy studio as I embark on a fishy adventure! Watch as I test out my new limited mixed media colour palette, creating studies for an upcoming large canvas. Discover how this carefully curated palette has revolutionised my approach to mixed media work, making me feel more comfortable and fluent than ever before.

  • Hello and welcome back to my little studio. For those of you who are new, I'm Eli Trier. I'm a professional artist, and today I thought we'd draw some fishies. I'm planning a large canvas which has some fishy elements, so I just want to practice today how I'm going to render those out in my sketchbook using my new, limited mixed media colour palette that I developed in my last video. If you haven't watched that, you can go and watch it in the corner up here or up here. I never know which way.

I'm not feeling wildly chatty today, so I thought we'd just watch some drawing with some music, and I'll catch up with you again. Okay, see you in a minute.

So this is the piece that you've just watched me complete, and it's actually the first piece I've done using my new mixed media colour palette that I pulled together in my last video. If you haven't watched that video, what I did was pull together a limited colour palette based on my work in acrylic in my mixed media supply. So colour palette, pencils, new colours, acrylic, gouache, all the stuff that I use in my sketchbook. The idea being that I wanted to have a more convenient shorthand for doing studies for larger paintings and working with unfamiliar media.

This is the first instance of that. It's actually the first in a series of studies I'm going to do for a much larger painting, which is not going to be this compositionally, but it will have some fishy elements to it. So this is just me practicing and seeing how I want to render these fish. And I love it. I'm really pleased, especially with this one. This one is absolutely gorgeous. I love his face.

I have to say that the colour palette was a resounding success. This is actually the first mixed media piece I've done where I felt really comfortable just reaching and grabbing for materials as I was going along. I think having a colour palette that I'm already really fluent in has made a huge difference.

So yeah, I hope you enjoyed watching me draw and I will see you in the next video. Bye!
