Sweater weather

It's officially autumn! The best season of the year! I can feel the the collective sigh of relief from all of my fellow winter babies - it's our time to shine. I'm always so much more productive, and more importantly, CREATIVE when it's cold outside - and I can't wait to dive into some hardcore art-making.

With that in mind, here are 5 things (about seasonality) to delight you:

1.

"That's the thing with time, isn't it? It's not all the same. Some days - some years - some decades - are empty. There is nothing to them. It's just flat water. And then you come across a year, or even a day, or an afternoon. And it is everything. It is the whole thing."

- Matt Haig, from How To Stop Time

2.

"In thirty lines I had stated that I could not agree with those who called the autumn a decline, and that I, for my part, referred to it as a beginning."

I'm so taken with this idea of autumn as a beginning, rather than a decline.

3.

"It is a mistake and a misreading of nature to think that you, a living creature, will be flourishing all the days of your life."

Everything is cyclical, especially creativity. If you pay attention to the rhythms of your life - your energy, your productivity, your rest - you'll find that ebb follows flow follows ebb follows flow. It's the way of things, and why we just have to trust the process.

4.

"Plodding and bursting exist along a spectrum. You may be near the middle, feeling competent using either mode, or you may be near the edges, vastly preferring one mode over the other."

This article remains one of the most validating things I've ever read, and I return to its premise often. No matter how hard I try to be a plodder, when it comes to art and creativity I am a burster - and a bloody magnificent one at that. And now we're heading into my creative burst season - eep! I can't wait to see what comes out!

5.

"We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep — but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. We’re suffering from a rest deficit because we don’t understand the true power of rest."

Whether you come alive at this time of year like me, or you're gritting your teeth to face the long, dark days ahead, resting well should always be a top priority. To keep my uber-bouncy brain calm, I need to remind myself often of all these different ways I can rest.
