The week that was: Jun 21st-27th

I’ve been craving more life-drawing lately. Especially if the model has a cat!

Working on…

  • Work on Things Men Have Said To Me Instead of Hello continues. I shared the first piece in last week’s newsletter, and here’s the second.

  • Whilst I love the 3D assemblage work I’ve been doing on Things, I’ve also missed doing more representational drawing so I’ve decided to pick up my life-drawing classes again.

Thinking about…

The way that we affect all of the other people we come into contact with, and what power and responsibility lies therein. I had two interactions with significant people this week - one who made me feel seen and respected as a person, and one who treated me like I was disposable. It takes so little to be kind.

Three separate people this week told me that my work (and by extension, me, I suppose) felt like a safe space, and that felt like the greatest honour and compliment I could ever be given. I don’t take that lightly.

Reading…

Funny Weather: Art in an Emergency by Olivia Laing

This book and I keep colliding with each other and bouncing off, which is strange because I adore everything Olivia Laing writes. This is the third time I’ve borrowed it from the library and the first time I’ve actually started to read it. I know there’s a reason it’s been making me wait for it, but I am yet to discover what that reason is…

Watching…

William Kentridge’s Self-Portrait As A Coffee-Pot on Mubi.

Kentridge is possibly my favourite living artist. And as much as I kinda hate that I’m saying that about an old white dude, he just floors me, again and again and again. I am endlessly inspired by his boundless creativity and intellect and silliness. He moves me.

Listening to…

I rediscovered the Trainspotting soundtrack recently (I’m refusing to accept that it’s 30 years old), and this track has been on repeat ever since.
